Why we have that Magento hosting rating table? Let’s go in detail with Performance Testing Experiment

We use Loadimpact to measure hosting performance of each provider, here’s what I found from each host. (The green line represents the increase in traffic, and the blue line represents the response time of the site as traffic increases)

1. Siteground.

SiteGround Magento Hosting

    • UNLIMITED Disk space, Bandwidth, Domains.
    • US, EU, ASIA Server location available.
    • Price: $3.95/MONTH (60% OFF NOW the regular $9.95/mo).
    • 30 DAY Money Back Guarantee.
    • ONE-CLICK TO INSTALL MAGENTO.
    • Free MAGENTO THEME.
    • Home page: www.siteground.com.

We’re hosting Tutorialmagento.com on SiteGround and they are one of our top performers, and price is especially impressive considering the $3.95/mo for their StartUp hosting tier. It does have a limitation of one website at that price, but considering the average response time was ~70ms all the way to 50 concurrent users with no real hiccups, SiteGround offers a great value.

A2hosting is also a good Magento hosting provider at affordable price, with $4/mo for their Personal package. A2hosting doesn’t limit the number of domains, even on their Personal package, however, as per my experience you should not run more than 2 Magento sites on Personal package due to hardware limitation. The average response time was ~115ms, which is good enough for a Magento site running on cheap shared hosting plan.

Bluehost is a reputed hosting provider founded in 2003 and keep growing at an incredible rate.  According to our test, Bluehost’s performance was good for WordPress but just decent for Magento. As traffic increased so did response time, when Bluehost approached the 40 concurrent users, load times jump to over 200ms. They did come back down, but performance was still highly inconsistent with huge variances from one second to the next. Bluehost is recommended for small Magento site only. One strong point of Bluehost is server-uptime, 99% server-uptime is recorded in my test, there support staff can help with simple Magento-related issues

To Sum It All Up…

The review is very detailed so it’s quite long, to sum it up, there’re 6 important things we should research before getting a Magento hosting.

  • Server Uptime: this is the most important key factor, Uptime is the amount of time that a server has stayed up and running online, we certainly want our Magento hosting to stay online 24/24 so that we will not miss any order.
  • Load Speed: with a fast load speed hosting, your customers will have better user-experience, they can check more products, read more pages on your sites and of course, they are likely to buy more products.
  • Server specifications: Make sure that the hosting you’re going to choose meets Magento system requirements (see more)
  • Price: Price is always a big concern, assuming that you’ve just started your new Magento store and you need money for many business activities such as: Marketing, advertising, hiring employees… so it’s just really great if you can find an affordable Magento hosting plan to start off (remember we can upgrade hosting plan whenever we want when our business grows big enough)
  • Server Location: This is mostly for SEO purpose, if you target customers in US, then go ahead with a Magento hosting in US. If you are targeting UK customers, then make sure that your Magento server is hosted in UK, this will benefit your site’s ranking in Search engine as your site are running under an IP from targeted country.
  • Support for hosting-related Magento issues: it’s also important that the hosting provide can provide reliable support for all web hosting related problems and for Magento issues as well. Make sure that they can deal with simple hosting-related Magento issues (not all complicated Magento issues)
You always see everything marked as Unlimited (HDD, Bandwidth….) but are they real? NO, there’s nothing unlimited at that price, so just select the provider that best fits your need. When looking to host brand new magento websites, choosing a web hosting service and plan is a simple task: get the smallest shared web hosting plan with the cheapest price / lowest response time / highest uptime (anything less than $10/month would be ideal), and simply upgrade only when your business grows big enough.
Question updated (10/20/2014): When is the right time to upgrade my Magento hosting plan to VPS or dedicated server?
If your current hosting can’t handle your site as traffic/number of products keep growing or you require more power for future business plan, VPS or ultimately dedicated hosting is the way to go. Use your site’s existing server data to help decide on a plan that is financially and technologically feasible for your means, you can check consumed Ram, CPU, HDD of your current Magento hosting, it they are running out => it’s the right time to upgrade to VPS (Should stay at <50%). A VPS brings you a lot of power and flexibility, secure hosting solution compared to shared hosting because you can add more settings to your website, which is limited on a Shared hosting.
My last words, never go for “overkill” in terms of server requirements. Only pay for what’s necessary, and upgrade when you have to.

I can imagine the speed on shared hosting @ hostgator. not really the best performance .. If anyone is serious in succeeding better off getting a bigger budget for their hosting in the first place.

Yes, these hosting are good for development or new business, if size of you are not running a small business, it’s better to have VPS/ Dedicated magento hosting
About Hostgator, recently they are having some hosting issues, so load speed is not good as before. I think they will handle this very quickly :) if not, we will make a ranking update.
